ADA Reviewing Two New Bills
(Posted 08/19/08)

Staff in Washington and in Chicago are analyzing two pieces of recently introduced legislation.

Sen. Jim Baucus's (D-Mont.) S. 3408 would create a "Health Care Comparative Effectiveness Research Institute," a private entity run by a private-public board of governors that would be charged with finding out what works in medicine. The institute would compare medical strategies currently in use in combating health problems in an effort to discover the most efficacious and cost-effective treatments. The insurance industry supports the measure, despite the bill's call for an initial annual fee on insurers of one dollar per insured customer to help fund the institute.

The other bill we're reviewing is H.R. 6201, the Student to Nurse Ratio Improvement Act of 2008. This legislation would establish a CDC grant program to reduce student-to-nurse ratios in schools. The National Association of School Nurses, in their letter of support to Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-N.Y.), included "dental problems" at our request.

CDC Oral Health Director Steps Down
(Posted 08/13/08)

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced last week that Dr. William Maas, director of the Division of Oral Health, will transition to other responsibilities within the agency. According to a CDC statement, Dr. Maas, who has been director for 10 years, has requested to continue to serve "from a different vantage point." The announcement said the agency will "draw on Bill's deep understanding of our CDC program, his considerable dental public health experience and insight, and the trust that he has built with public and private partners over the years to work with partner organizations and leadership groups and leverage relationships with HHS and other federal agencies, think tanks, and other public and private organizations on behalf of oral health."

The CDC statement added that an acting director will be named by early September, and that a nationwide search for a new permanent director will commence thereafter.
